Faces From The East
The German Democratic Republic - and the over 1,100 Soviet military installations within it - were once home to 500,000 Soviet soldiers and countless military family members. Entire cities sprung up in every, and often the most remote, corners of East Germany. With the collapse of not one but two political systems, an unknown future awaited.
Over 30 years have passed since the last troops of the former Soviet Union made their long journey back home. For the past 15 years, we've been documenting what the Soviets left behind, encountering stony faces, colorful mosaics, wallpapered photos, and mundane murals of a parallel society. Presented in the first volume of this Zine is a small collection of "Faces From The East" that we encountered during our journeys through these seemingly not-so-abandoned Soviet military installations.
